History

For nearly 150 years, The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa has stood at the heart of Riverside, welcoming generations of guests to experience California history, extraordinary architecture, and gracious hospitality.

What began in 1876 as a modest adobe boarding house evolved under the vision of founder Frank Miller into one of America’s most celebrated historic hotels. By 1903, the Inn had expanded to more than 200 guestrooms with the addition of the Mission Wing, inspired by California’s Spanish missions and incorporating architectural elements from more than 20 historic missions throughout the state. As the hotel continued to grow, the Cloister, Spanish Wing, and Rotunda Wing followed, creating the magnificent landmark guests experience today.

Throughout the Inn, Miller’s passion for art, history, and discovery remains woven into the experience. He filled the hotel with treasures collected from around the world, from fine furnishings and artwork to religious artifacts. Among its remarkable collection is a bell dating to 1247, believed to be the oldest bell in Christendom.

Lovingly restored under the stewardship of Duane Roberts, the Inn retains the grandeur of its past while offering the comforts of a luxury resort. Now spanning an entire city block, the AAA Four Diamond hotel features distinctive accommodations, celebrated dining, an award-winning spa, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and a beautifully landscaped outdoor pool.

From soaring domes and grand towers to intricate archways, hand-painted details, and hidden courtyards, every corner reveals another piece of the Inn’s remarkable story.

Over the decades, The Mission Inn has welcomed U.S. Presidents, Hollywood legends, celebrated artists, scientists, and cultural icons. Its storied guest list includes Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Ronald Reagan, Amelia Earhart, Albert Einstein, and Tom Hanks.

The Inn’s distinctive architecture has also made it a favorite setting for filmmakers, appearing on screen in productions including The Vampire (1915), Idiot’s Delight (1938), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998).
